TVGateway and Charter Communications Begin IPG Roll-Out as a Follow-On To Long-Term Deal Terms
TREVOSE, Pa., and ST. LOUIS, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- TVGateway LLC and Charter Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: CHTR) today announced a roll-out schedule for the deployment of TVGateway's Interactive Program Guide (IPG), to Charter cable systems now providing digital video services.
TVGateway, a joint venture comprised of Charter, WorldGate Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: WGAT), Adelphia Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: ADLAC), Comcast Cable Communications, Inc., a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSK, CMCSA) and Cox Communications, Inc. (NYSE: COX), was announced July 26, 2000, for the purpose of deploying the TVGateway IPG and licensing WorldGate's patented Channel HyperLinking(SM) and Ultra-Thin Client(SM) technology to the venture partners and other cable operators.
Steve Schumm, Charter Executive Vice President, said the TVGateway IPG deployment will occur in phases, with phase one already underway, providing availability to 250,000 customers in 13 Charter markets. In conjunction with Charter's ongoing $3.5 billion rebuild program, a second phase will begin later this year, providing TVGateway availability to another 350,000 customers, according to Mr. Schumm.
"The digital platform that Charter is building today will serve as our launch pad to providing new, advanced video, audio and data services," Mr. Schumm said. "In order to maximize the customer's digital viewing experience, it's important to provide an effective, user-friendly IPG, such as the one provided by TVGateway, and that's why a long-term deal with them is advantageous," he continued.
"When our consortium formed TVGateway last July, we did so for the express purpose of creating a viable alternative in the IPG marketplace," said TVGateway chairman Hal Krisbergh, who is also chairman and chief executive officer of WorldGate. "In just eight months, we have created an IPG that can help cable customers to realize the full value of the video, audio and data services brought by the digital cable box. Now we are poised to begin a steady roll-out of TVGateway to systems both within and outside of our joint venture partners' service areas."
