Responding to "Unhealthy & Fat" Titles, the Mayor of St. Louis & St. Louis County Executive Launch "Get Hooked on Health St. Louis"

Ozzie Smith Named St. Louis Fitness Czar, Health & Fitness Expo Planned

ST. LOUIS, MO, Mar. 29, 2004 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) -- Mayor Francis G. Slay and County Executive Charlie Dooley announced at a news conference today a year 'round regional health and fitness initiative. The Mayor, quoting Mickey Mantle, said, "'If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.' As someone who makes health and fitness a priority in my life, I'm aware that we all need to understand that health is not just about carbs and calories; it's about lifestyle."

"We want to and we will change the image of St. Louis from heavy to healthy," said County Executive Dooley. Dooley's charge: "Make the number FIVE your goal -- by eating five fruits and vegetables a day and getting out for a walk five times a week -- a great way to enjoy St. Louis' beautiful parks."

The Mayor and County Executive announced the naming of Baseball Hall of Fame star Ozzie Smith as the City of St. Louis' first fitness czar. They, together with Paul Sly, Vice President of Advertising for Charter Communications, launched Get Hooked on Health St. Louis, a program designed "to provide information and motivation to equip St. Louisans to take more personal responsibility for making healthful daily choices -- from nutrition to exercise," according to the Mayor.

Smith said, "We're determined to make the health and fitness of our citizens a priority. In fact, we're determined to make heath and fitness one of our greatest assets." He added, "You only get out of something what you put into it. And getting into better shape and becoming physically active means you live a more productive life. That's worth working for."

Charter Communications' commitment to Get Hooked on Health St. Louis is bringing visibility to the effort on a daily basis by airing local programming, health and fitness tips and community health-related information daily on its cable networks. "Get Hooked On Health St. Louis has a beginning today, but it has no end," said Charter's Paul Sly. "We know that the health of people of all ages would improve with modest but regular physical activity and better eating habits. An important step is making it happen on a regular basis -- getting hooked on health."

Charter is putting together a free public event, Charter Get Hooked on Health Expo, sponsored by the YMCA of Greater St. Louis and set for January 8 and 9, 2005, a finale for the 2004 fitness and health campaign and the kick-off of the 2005 community-wide effort. Sly added, "Charter loves St. Louis and cares about its image and cares deeply about the folks who live here. We consider it a privilege to be able to help St. Louis Get Hooked on Health."
